Borts Broom used to be known as I205 Bypass and I thought THAT was a terrible name. Well, prove me wrong and buy this dwarf circinatum. Full sun is fine.

Hedge maples are just that: maples to be made into hedges; the reason is that the limbs go everywhichaway filling up all available space; there are a couple of cultivars that lend themselves to stand alone semi-shade status (Elizabeth, eg), but generally the species lends itself to hedgeness (hedgity?). Royal Rubies is a fair large growing cultivar with deep red leaves in the spring which turn green in the summer when it provides a showy mass of bright red seeds (hence the name). Way hardy. zone 4.

The marbled leaves of this cultivar make it an interesting addition to a small garden. Usually a compact shrub to 8′, we usually grow it as a standard. It would prefer some afternoon shade to avoid burning the white variegation; but it will lighten up a shady area. Zone 5

Acer buergerianum cultivars are a great favorite with bonsai enthusiasts and this Small Leaf Variegate would be perfect for them because it is on its own root where as most of the cultivars are grafted. However the ones I have are sprawly and would need a lot of shaping; they also don’t have too much variegation and the fall color in the greenhouse was pretty minimal. So the upshot of all these ‘howevers’ is that you bonsai people better order this plant or I will not continue it.

Trident maples are known for their fall color as you can see in this photo. Ningpoense is a semi-dwarf form of the species. The leaves are somewhat smaller, excellent for bonzai. zone 6

This is a lovely very small dwarf; the leaves are short, broad, thick, and dark green. Like all buergeranums, this one resists propagation so I have very few. To zone 6.

Mino yatsubusa’s leaves look like they have been on a rack: three long narrow lobes. Very dwarf plant, hardy but difficult to propagate. Great fall color as shown by this photo from Michael Healy.
