Snakebark Maple (Acer crataegifolium ‘Veitchii’)
Of all the trees that I grow, this may be the most delicate. It is a snakebark, so the trunk will burn if the tree is in a hot sunny place. The bluish leaves are variegated white and pink and the limbs are thin and fragile, but it is so lovely! The only mature specimen that I have seen is in the UW arboretum in Seattle; it was no more than 12′. zone 6

Redvein Maple (Acer rufinerve)
The species rufinerve can be relied upon to produce magnificent fall color. This cultivar which will get perhaps 20′ is no exception; It is a ‘snakebark’ so is best planted as an understory tree to prevent the burning of the bark on the SW side. zone 6

Red Snakebark Maple (Acer rubescens ‘Silver Cardinal’)
This is the hottest of the hot new snakebarks. The leaves are small a brightly variegated with white and the twigs are bright red all summer. In the winter the trunk is pink striped. Zone 6.

Red Snakebark Maple (Acer pennsylvanicum ‘Erythrocladum’)
Smaller than species, but similar in form and leaf, this tree in winter has stunning red and white striped bark which does not diminish with age (as in A.p.Sangokaku) Very rare as it is difficult to propagate. Zone 4.
