True Bay Tree is a dense small, evergreen tree (10-12′), the leaves of which one buys dry in bottles in the grocery store. It is a wonderful garden specimen, but unfortunately not very hardy. I have never had one die here in Oregon (zone 7), but it is probably a zone 8 tree.

One of the common names for Dieramma is ‘Angel’s Fishing Pole. The purple flowers hang like bells from long upright wands and are followed by golden seed pods which are also striking. At Whitman Farms, we don’t grow many perennials, but I cling to this one. zone 7

You can see from the picture the winter effect of this tree; in summer it has a creamy look with various fall color to the leaves. Zone 6.

Of all the trees that I grow, this may be the most delicate. It is a snakebark, so the trunk will burn if the tree is in a hot sunny place. The bluish leaves are variegated white and pink and the limbs are thin and fragile, but it is so lovely! The only mature specimen that I have seen is in the UW arboretum in Seattle; it was no more than 12′. zone 6

A shrubby tree to 10′; it sports small almost round 9 lobed leaves which are a green tinged with red in the summer and gold to purple in the fall. zone 5

Like any snakebark, this tree needs to be kept out of direct sunlight as the dark purple bark with distinctive white vertical lines is tender and will burn. Good fall color on small three lobed leaves. Zone 5.

The trunk of this tree is yellowish in summer and gold in the winter. As with all snakebarks, it should be grown as an understory tree because of burning on the trunk. The leaves are variegated. Zone 7

The species rufinerve can be relied upon to produce magnificent fall color. This cultivar which will get perhaps 20′ is no exception; It is a ‘snakebark’ so is best planted as an understory tree to prevent the burning of the bark on the SW side. zone 6
