Violaceum (Acer negundo ‘Violaceum’)

In the mild Willamette Valley where I live, I was charmed by the long soft pink flower tassels in the spring, but the summer was a bust as the leaves which are slightly purple and larger than species seem to be variously diseased, and as I don’t spray, I decided this was a tree for a colder clime. zone 3.

Sensation (Acer negundo ‘Sensation’)

Usually A. negundo has no to poor fall color, but Sensation breaks the mold and has great color and a good rounded habit, so if I lived somewhere miserably cold where I was limited in my maple choices, this is the one I would plant. Zone 3.

Flamingo (Acer negundo 'Flamingo')

Flamingo (Acer negundo 'Flamingo')

This cultivar stays reasonably small: under 30′. The variegation which in spring is a clear pink and white, reverts to green and white later in the summer; the branches are a grey green. zone 4

Vitifolium (Acer japonicum ‘Vitifolium’)

The name means ‘grape-leafed’, and that is what the large leaves resemble; the tree can get up to 30 feet or a little more in a graceful open sort of droopy habit. As with other japonicums, the fall color is varied with oranges, yellows, purples etc. You can see a leaf changing on the left side of the picture. zone 5
