Like Kurui jishi, Okushimo has curled-in leaves, but the tree is much narrower and taller (which is not saying much in terms of height (10′)), and the leaves are a light fresh green in the summer. Fall color is variable, gold to red.

An unusual leaf color not captured by this photo, it is purple in the early spring and turns brick colored in the summer, quite nice, actually. The tree can get 30′. This one is probably 20 and isn’t getting much bigger. Fall color is orange red. zone 6

Novum (Acer palmatum ‘Novum’ )
Novum is a vigorous upright red; in the summer it gets lighter and redder rather than bronze which is a good thing. In the fall it is scarlet. If you want a red leafed palmatum, you can hardly do better than this one. zone 5.

Murasaki kiohime (Acer palmatum ‘Murasaki kiohime’ )
This shrubbly little dwarf has small green 5-lobed leaves that are distinctly purple rimmed when they first come out. Zone 5.

Mirte is one of my favorite small trees and it’s hard to explain. The spring color is described as brown. Well, I hate brown leaves. I prefer to say that they are subtly nuanced.
