This is sort of a long story but here goes: maybe 8 years ago I heard about this great new grape intro from Cornell (therefore hardy), but I needed a license to grow it. I got the license but never could get cuttings to get started. My neighbor nursery (a much larger enterprise) got some cuttings but kept losing them but finally got some planted out and I tasted the fruit for the first time this year. It was, in fact, the best flavored grape I have ever eaten (medium to large golden brown when ripe) but it has some problems. First it is stuck to its stemlet like glue and once you get it off, it is best not to pop the whole thing in your mouth as the hull is bitter and thick. Personally I prefer the grapes that I squeeze into my mouth and discard the hull anyway so the only drawback was that I needed a crowbar to dislodge the grape from the little doodily.

This 6′ x 6′ shrub bears delicious fruit in mid summer. The green leaves with silver undersides give this bush an intriguing look. zone 5

Considered the hardiest of figs, it is said to take down to 5 degrees, but if that is what you normally get, it would be wise to plant next to a southfacing solid wall; sometimes figs freeze to the ground, but they will come back and fruit that same year.

Desert King is an excellent fig for me. The fruit is green on the outside and pink inside and delicious fresh and dried. I only get one crop per year however.

Large roundish yellow fruit with golden flesh is the most reliable in my area. Ripening in September. Zone 7.

Long purple fruit is pink inside and sweet. Zone 7.

Somewhat smaller bush than Nero but the same large clusters of fruit.
Size: 1 gallon | Price: $25.00 |
If you like Aronias you will like Nero and Viking. (I can’t tell them apart), as they produce massive clusters of decent sized berries. Probably a person would process them to juice or jam or something.
