In spite of its unprepossessing name, Baldsmith has become popular among the dissectums; it has the same cascading habit, but the leaf color changes throughout the season beginning with tones of pink and orange, adding green in the summer and turning many shades of orange and red in the fall. Unfortunately it is not wildly vigorous, but it is definitely worth waiting for it to grow. I have another cultivar ‘Watnong’ (also unfortunately named) which may be the same cultivar. zone 6. This photo by Michael Helay captures the variation in the color excellently; it is always changing.

Autumn Fire is a green dissectum with a difference; it is vigorous and somewhat upright with dark green leaves which are stubbier than normal. Early leaves show pink edges as seen in the photo from Michael Healy.

Yezo nishiki (Acer palmatum ‘Yezo nishiki’ )
This upright red cultivar is smaller and more delicate looking than Bloodgood, otherwise it is pretty similar in that it holds its crimson color well in summer and has good scarlet fall color. Zone 5.

Yazemin (Acer palmatum ‘Yazemin’ )
Yazemin is thought to be a cross between palmatum and shirasewanum. The leaves are a glossy crimson into the summer changing to a bronze sort of color–very distinctive really. The tree gets large: 25-30′.

Winter Flame (Acer palmatum ‘Winter Flame’)
Sorry about the pic. It is truly the lazy man’s photo to put up a pic of a one gallon when there are beauties in the field, but if have seen Sango Kaku or Beni Kawa or any of the coral barks, then you can imagine this tree. Winter Flame is just a little shorter and a little bushier. And more resistant to pseudomonas? Those claims are out there. In my open windy location, pseudomonas is not a problem so I can’t test it. This one is my favorite.

Uki gumo (Acer palmatum ‘Uki gumo’ )
The translation of the name of this maple is Floating Cloud which is appropriate if you think of early morning fluffy pink clouds; the foliage on this tree is otherwise indescribable, but it grows slowly to 8′. Zone 6
