Mirte (Acer palmatum 'Mirte')

Mirte is one of my favorite small trees and it’s hard to explain. The spring color is described as brown. Well, I hate brown leaves. I prefer to say that they are subtly nuanced.

Mikazuki (Acer palmatum 'Mikazuki')

No plants generates more comment in the spring than this little pink reticulate. The picture hardly catches the magic.

Mikawa yatsubusa (Acer palmatum 'Mikawa yatsubusa' )

This layered dwarf (if 8′ x 8′ can be considered a dwarf) is one of my all time favorites; the summer green is bright and healthy and the fall color is orange and scarlet and long lived.

Matthew (Acer palmatum 'Matthew's Broom' )

Matthew’s Broom is a golden green dwarf that reportedly does particularly well in the hot sun. The fall color is particularly fine as the photo from Winch shows.

Matsukaze (Acer palmatum 'Matsukaze')

A small upright tree with dissected reddish bronze leaves with noticeable green veining. Red fall color. Interesting.

Matsugae (Acer palmatum 'Matsugae' )

This is a variegate much like Butterfly except is it not so twiggy–about the same size though, 10′. Zone 5.

Mama (Acer palmatum 'Mama')

A small spreading tree with deeply dissected 5 lobed leaves that go every whichaway

Lionheart (Acer palmatum 'Lion Heart' )

Lionheart is supposed to be the red leafed equivalent to Seiryu, the green upright dissectum, but I have not seen that; although it certainly has a red dissected leaf, it hasn’t nearly the vigor of Seiryu and altho it is not actually pendulous, it is more spreading than upright. But look at this photo taken today 11/30/11. really nice late color

Lima Gold (Acer palmatum 'Lima Gold' )

Lima Gold is a dwarf similar in form to Mikawa yatsubusa. The spring gold surrounded by the red seed starts is stunning.

Kurui jishi (Acer palmatum 'Kurui jishi' )

This cultivar has strongly incurved leaves and supposedly a vase shaped habit; but mine have a sort of drooping wide shape. The leaves are darker green than Okushimo which has a similar leaf form. zone 5.
